What is Lymphedema
Lymphedema is a chronic condition characterized by accumulation of protein-rich fluid in the interstitial space and consequent tissue swelling because of damaged lymph nodes (the body’s waste drainage system). This leads to pain, swelling, lack of mobility, reduced quality of life, and multiple complications/comorbidities including but not limited to recurrent cellulitis infections. In some patients, infections can occur as often as twice per year.
With many types of cancer, including breast and various gynecological cancers, the patient’s lymphatic system can be damaged by surgery and/or radiation therapy which scars, or blocks the lymphatic vessels and nodes, thus reducing flow and drainage. Advanced tumors and metastasis can even physically block lymphatic flow.
